Rex's post from Day 3 (September 1)

Day 3, Monday September 1, 2014 Chadron, Nebraska to Spearfish, South Dakota
179 Miles, 1154 Miles So Far

What a great morning, woke up to beautiful sunshine and a temperature of 54 degrees. There’s no coffee in our rooms so the very nice lady who owns the Bunkhouse Motel set up coffee and chairs underneath an awning outside so we all could sit around visit and get the day started with a good cup of coffee.

David and the Motel owner wanted us all lined up so they get a picture of everyone with their bikes in front of the hotel. She is really a neat person. After all the picture had been taken we left at 9am for breakfast at Helen’s Café. Gary and Sheryl decided to do some shopping so they headed to Walls Drug Store and then rode through the Bad Lands. After a great breakfast David wanted a rest from leading so he asked Mark to lead us towards the Black Hills, Mark with a HUGE SMILE accepted. Everyone started getting very excited when you started making out the beautiful Black Hills coming into view.

It looked like we were going to get to our hotel very early so Mark pulled all over in Custer and asked what everyone wanted to do. It was decided that we would at least go by Mount Rushmore and possible go in. As soon as we got to the entrance of Mount Rushmore it started raining and on the radar it looked like we could possible get soaked so everyone decided to head to the Best Western in Spearfish except Mr. Mark Jensen he decided and without telling anyone that he was going to go ahead and go in, the rest of us headed to our home for the night. As you know Mark can be a little hard headed at times. He had a great time on his short visit of Rushmore and ran into a man traveling by motorcycle from Massachusetts, just lucky can he be to run into the other Red Sox fan from the US.

It rained on us for several miles on Hwy 14 and by the time we turned onto 14A it was starting to letting up a little. Most of the riding on 14A was absolutely fantastic with a little rain now and then. Ray, Ron and myself had gotten in the front of the pack and got into one of those great riding rhythms and a wonderful time in the twistees of 14A. I have no doubts that everyone loved riding 14A.

We all arrived at the Best Western safe and sound checked in and unpacked the bikes. It will great being able to stay at one Hotel for four days without having to pack up every morning. About an hour later here came Gary and Sheryl back from their day of going solo.

After everyone had unpacked their bikes. The sun came out and most of us met outside with some washing their bikes, some taking a ride around the area, some filling up with gas and getting provision from the Convenience Store and Poor Ray having to work on his intercom that his wife Lisa had purposely filled with water before we left.

At 6pm we all met next door at the Millstone Restaurant, the food and service was outstanding. After a great meal you know who decided to have desert, once I tell you what dessert consisted of you will know who ordered it. Chocolate Fudge Cake topped with Ice Cream, Whipped Cream with Hot Fudge on top. I will have you know that Ray ate most of that all by himself and we have pictures to prove it.

After dinner we sat around in the Lobby to decide what was on a agenda for tomorrow and after about an hour of discussion it was decided that we will meet for breakfast and decide.

David could not have picked out a better location for us to stay at here in Spearfish, Very Nice Best Western Hotel
Millstone Restaurant next door, great food and friendly people
Motorcycle wash station set up next to the Hotel in the parking lot Nice Tavern in the Hotel Lobby with a friendly Bartender
Gas Station & Convenience Store with Slot Machines across the street

Today with the on and off rain with straight roads and wonderful twisties it will go down in our memories as another Adventuress Day,

Have a great day,
Rex
