Rex's post from Day 10 (September 8)

Day 10, Monday September 8, 2014
Spearfish, South Dakota
410 Miles, 3277 Total GPS Miles

We had decided that we would be leaving at 7:30am, temperature 62 degrees since we have a long day ahead of us and would like to be in Dallas before rush hour traffic. When we got ready to leave David had a rear flat tire. Amarillo has not been kind to Mr. David a few months ago when returning from Taos, NM he had a flat leaving Amarillo on the rear of his Kawasaki C-14. Due to all the practice and full participation from everyone we had tire plugged and ready to go in about 30 minutes.

After about 30 miles or so leaving Amarillo we took 207 off of 287 to ride through Palo Duro Canyon. As many times that I had ridden to and from Amarillo I had never been there. What a beautiful place it just pops up from nowhere. We stopped and took some picture overlooking the canyon.

After leaving Palo Duro Canyon we headed back to 287 were we also got see parts of Caprock Canyon also.  We even got to ride through Turkey, Texas the home of legendary country singer Bob Wills who played with his band the Texas Playboys.

Well after that let’s just say that we did not much exciting after that except for miles and miles of almost nothing to see except for same old stuff.

I got home at 3:04 and the temperature was 93, a BIG DIFFERENCE with what we had been used to over the last few days.

It was a great trip with some great people with no casualties. It’s the makeup of all the different personalities that makes these trips so successful. I would like to thank David and Howard again for their planning of a wonderful ride with all of its memories.

Until our next trip, Ride Often and Be Safe,

Rex

Day 9, Sunday September 7, 2014
Spearfish, South Dakota
423 Miles, 2867 Miles So Far

Since there’s not a restaurant at the Central Motel we are going to meet at the Sonic across the street at 8:00am have breakfast and head out to Amarillo, temperature is 57 degrees.

There’s not a lot to write about on the scenery, if you have ever ridden on 287 from Colorado through Oklahoma too Amarillo you know what I mean.

Okay I did think of something we had lunch at Pizza Hut somewhere on 287.

We arrived at the Best Western Medical Center in Amarillo at about 5:00pm with a temperature of 76 degrees.

After everyone unpacked and cleaned their bikes we decided to eat next door at Joe’s Taco that Howard recommended. The food was very good with huge portions but the service was excellent.

You can really tell that we are all winding down and ready to get home.

The first Black Hills Ride Wild Hog is home. I left Friday morning and rode 600 miles to Hays, KS and 540 miles home yesterday.

Thanks to all of the riders on this great trip. I will not forget Spearfish Canyon, 16A, or Needles Highway anytime soon. They were a blast and David and Ray did a great job leading our group on the day rides from Spearfish to Badlands, Crazy Horse, and Mt Rushmore.

Good ride with good friends...make that GREAT.

Day 8, Saturday September 6, 2014
Spearfish, South Dakota
352 Miles, 2444 Miles So Far

We decided to head out this morning at 8:00am, so everyone got busy got their bike loaded, checked out and ready to go. When we left it was sunny and 52 degrees.

We all said our goodbye’s too Marty and Butch since they are going to take a different route so they could be home sometime Sunday. So that left us with 11 bike and 12 riders but Frank is going to cut off from us before lunch so he could ride to Denver to meet his lovely wife Karla at the airport so they could spend a few day together riding in Colorado. That will leave us with 10 bikes and 11 fearless participants, our numbers are dwindling.

After leaving the hotel we took out last ride on 14A to 85 but there are parts of both roads that is called Ice Box Canyon and it called that for good reason, based on my temperature gauge it got down to 34 degrees. The temperature dropped almost 20 degrees in just a few minutes. Since all I was wearing was two shirts and my rain jacket I thought I was going to freeze. But after about 10-15 miles it started warming up again.

After leaving the Black Hills It was pretty much an uneventful ride to Fort Morgan except for an occasional awesome view of a few mountains and lots rolling meadows with deep gullies.

We arrived at the Central Motel in Fort Morgan at about 3pm and it was 72 degrees. The motel is an older motel but very well maintained. Betty and her husband Allan purchased it about 18 years ago and have fixed it up very nice. In my opinion out of the three independent motels we have stayed at on this trip this is the best one.

After checking in and sitting around on lawn chairs in the courtyard David decided that he wanted to eat at Cables Pub & Grill located on Main Street. Cables was highly recommended by one of the locals in town and besides it was about two blocks away. They serve all types of food and BIG potions.

This is where it gets funny!!!!

The Great French Fry Fiasco!!! We were having a good time but a getting tired type of good time. Now Jeff who has consumed a couple of Margaritas was sitting next to Howard at the table. Apparently Howard and Jeff ordered the same type of dishes like a wrap of some sort except Howard got Cole Slaw for a side and Jeff ordered Fries. So when the meals are served Howard has his meal his slaw and Jeff’s fries on his plate, Jeff’s had this small plate placed in front of him with just a lonely wrap on it. Now no one notices this except Jeff and all of a sudden everyone can hear Jeff talking fairly loudly about these darn fries that are on Howard’s plate to Howard and that those should have been on his plate but he said it was okay and all was good but about every minute he said the same thing over and over again and always ending it that it really doesn’t matter it’s all good but he keeps staring at the fries and Howard keep offering him some of the fries and Jeff keeps saying it doesn’t matter BUT he keeps saying the same thing over and over again. We all were laughing so hard that I thought we would die. It really made the night a great night. I guess you just would had to be there to get the full effect!!!!

After dinner we came back to the Motel went to our rooms and made it an early night.

Another great day with great friends,

Rex

Day 7, Friday September 5, 2014
Spearfish, South Dakota
181 Miles, 2092 Miles So Far

Today we decided to go in one group to Devils Tower in Wyoming.

It was 39 degree and sunny when we got up this morning and we decided to leave at 9:00. By 9:00 it was a balmy 52 and that was good enough for departure. Mark left this morning for home, he had to be at work Monday and wanted to try and get home early Sunday to watch the Patriots Game. Butch and Marty had already been to the Devils Tower so they did their own thing. David decided he wanted to go and check out Deadwood and Lead and do the History thing. So that left us with 9 bikes and 10 riders. With Ray in the lead and me pulling drag off we went.

Ray found a place called “Center of the Nation Monument” in Belle Fourche, SD. It appears the City of Belle Fourche, SD is the Center of the 50 States. It turned out to be very neat place to see and get some great pictures.

We then took off for Devils Tower. What a great place to visit and do some sightseeing and take some fantastic pictures. The ride to and from Devils Tower is just awesome.

We took off to Sundance, SD for a bite to eat. We stopped at the ARO Café near the downtown square. The food was great and the entire staff was VERY friendly.

After lunch Jeff went to the Honda shop to get his headlight bulbs replaced with Larry in tow, Ronnie, Gary & Sheryl went back to the hotel and the rest of us went back to Sturgis to do some more looking around.

Most of us returned to the hotel at about 4:15 and it was 64 degrees.

After everyone got cleaned up we all agreed with David that we are getting pretty burned out on Millstone Restaurant and decided to go somewhere different. David found a place called Killian’s Tavern and it was Ranked #6 out of 52 restaurants in Spearfish. We had reservations for 6:30 and met out front of the hotel at 6:15 to head over.

The food was good but the service was lacking due to apparently not having enough staff on duty. Our waitress was very nice and really did her best.

We are all back at the hotel packing getting ready to head out in the morning towards home at 8:00am. We’ve had a wonderful time in the Black Hills but I think everyone is ready to get home.

Day 6, Thursday September 4, 2014
Spearfish, South Dakota
266 Miles, 1910 Miles So Far

Today we had a lot of people do their own thing. I went to the Badlands along with Dennis and Larry. The wind was blowing 10 to 30 mph.

We left the hotel at 8:35am at 54 degrees but with the wind it felt like 45. When we arrived at the Badlands we visited the Visitors Center and watched a 20 minute video about the area and the animals that exist but rarely seen.

The area is just unbelievable the beautiful sculptured majestic mountains and deep ravines with all of its colored layers. It’s something that you just can’t explain, almost looks like something you would imagine seeing on Mars.

Once we left the park we went to Walls Drug for lunch had to be one of the fastest lunches we have had on this trip. The area where we chose to park our bikes in a packed downtown square might be a little suspect to the professional law enforcement officers of Wall, SD. We walked in found a seat went to the counter ordered the Legendary No1, it’s an Open faced Roast Beef on bread smothered in brown gravy with a scoop of mashed potatoes. We were in and out in less 30 minutes.

After lunch we headed to Sturgis to get a rear tire mounted that Dennis had ordered before we left Dallas. He was not sure if the tire would make all the way home or not (it’s better to play it safe). I would totally recommend the Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW Dealership in Sturgis, they were very professional courteous and got us out within an hour.

We then road around Sturgis and visited Tom’s T-Shirts on the Main Street so Larry and Dennis could stock up on souvenirs.

We headed back to the hotel and arrived about 5pm and 64 degrees. Cleaned up the bikes and got ready for dinner.

We met for dinner at 7pm and I bet you can guess where, you got it we had dinner AGAIN at Millstone Restaurant. After dinner some sat in the Bar and watched the football game.

Well today was a little crazy it was a long mostly boring highway riding with VERY HIGH winds to and from the Badlands Park that at times would try to pull your helmet off your head but all in all it was worth it. It just would not have been right to come all this way and not go.

Visiting the Railroad Museum in Hill City

Back to Mt Rushmore

David, Ray, Ron, Howard, Jeff, and Mark are at Mt Rushmore.

Rex's post from Day 5 (September 3)

Day 5, Wednesday September 3, 2014
Spearfish, South Dakota
255 Miles, 1644 Miles So Far

Today I decided to lead a group to Mount Rushmore. Let’s see Frank, Lance, Gary & Sheryl, Larry and Dennis my Tail Gunner joined me for another wonderful day of riding in the Black Hills,

We left the Hotel at 8:30 am with a temperature of 54 degrees. After going through Deadwood and Lead we continued on 85 which took us into Wyoming and then back into South Dakota.

We did run into some major road work after we passed Newcastle on Hwy 16 about 15 miles from Custer. It started off like it was not going to be any problems with hard packed asphalt BUT it turned out to be very trick gravel. Even though the gravel was medium in size it was VERY THICK! It will really wake you up and make you pucker a little bit. Waiting to be escorted on one lanes roads it took us about 30 minutes all together to get through it.

I was able to surprise Dennis when we got to Custer about 11am and took him to the hamburger place he wanted go to the day before called Black Hills Hamburger and Bun Co. That had to be one of the best hamburgers that I had ever eaten. It only held about 30 people and even though we got there that early it was already getting packed.

We continued on 16 to 87 another part of Custer State Park and Sylvan Lake which was absolutely beautiful.

We continued to Needle’s Highway which is full of one vehicle tunnels, tight switchbacks and huge rock and stunning scenery. I could not get over the clean air and the wonderful smell of pine and other types of trees. Lance had a good time trying to get a picture of a Chipmunk. What a wonderful road.

We then headed to Iron Mountain Road which like Needle’s Hwy but had LOTS and LOTS more curves and LOTS of wonderful switchbacks. It also has three wooden curved bridges that loop across a road beneath you that they call Pigtails it was very cool. As you pass through one of the tunnels you have a view of Mount Rushmore miles away. I think Sheryl got a picture as they exited the tunnel. We pulled over to a rest area and to our amazement you had a PERFECT view of Mount Rushmore which looked like at least ten miles away, we took some great pictures.

We arrived at Mount Rushmore spent about one and half hours there looking and marveling over the enormity of it all. I have no doubt that a lot of people had sacrificed over that project, what a beautiful place.

It was about 4pm when we left Mount Rushmore and a few miles down the road that’s when my GPS started deceiving me and almost causing it’s separation from its holder and brief moment of being airborne. After two u-turns Dennis and I we were able to get us back on track on that marvelous Nemo Rd again. I’m telling you guys that Nemo Rd is the best.

We did have funny thing happen to us today, I don’t remember exactly where we were but on a long stretch of road I could see something way up there in the middle of the road. As we got closer I could tell it was a goat square dab in the middle of the road just standing there looking at us and blocking our lane. As we got within about 20 feet of him we stopped, I’m sitting here with all of these bikes staring at this one horned mangy looking goat who refuses to move. When I honked my horn and revved my engine he started scratching his hoof on the ground and bowing his head, he was definitely getting ready to charge us. So if you are thinking that we will give into this one horned mangy looking old goat well you would be correct we did we made a WIDE path around him before he could charge. The Darn thing won that battle. It was really funny.

We made it back to the hotel at 6:10 and 88 degrees after another wonderful day of riding with some wonderful people.

After getting cleaned I ordered eight hand tossed pizza’s for our LSR Pizza Night in the breakfast area.  When I order those pizza’s the manager of the pizza place said I order too much for 15 people he said it was enough for about 30. I explained to him that he did not know that group of guys like I do and after dinner we had only two pieces left over. We had a great time and the best part the club paid for it, WooHoo!!!!!!

Everyone again tonight must be worn out with all of this fresh air, beautiful country and twisties and switchback infested roads because everyone went to bed very early.

Another Wonderful Day,
Rex

The Wild Hogs at Crazy Horse Memorial

We had a great ride and the visit to the Crazy Horse Memorial was quite impressive.

Lone Star Riders Pizza Night

Rex decided that we just order pizza and have a great time at the hotel.

We had lunch at Crazy Horse Laughing Waters Restaurant

Good food at a cool place!  The salmon burger was great.

Visit to Crazy Horse Memorial

What a great stop at the Crazy Horse Memorial

Rex's post from Day 4 (September 2)

Day 4, Tuesday September 2, 2014
Spearfish, South Dakota
236 Miles, 1390 Miles So Far

Editors Correction: In Day 3 when I referred to Roads 16 and 16A, it should have been 14 and 14A.  I have no idea how I got those confused.

Well we finally had a meeting this morning at 8am at breakfast and we decided to break up into two groups, since we could not decide what and where to go. Ray jumped out there and said he would lead a group and do the Badland Route. I decided that I would a group to the Crazy Horse Route. Well in my group I had Gary and Sheryl, Frank, Lance, Marty, Larry, Butch and Dennis as my tail gunner. We left about 8:30 and headed out to the Black Hills.

After riding through historic Deadwood we stopped on the way at the Dam to get some scenic pictures and make a call to nature but the facility was closed so we stopped a few miles later at the Conoco Station.

Our first stop was the Crazy Horse Monument, what a great facility and a great cause. It is one of my favorite places to visit, for some reason it just feels right about supporting the construction of the facility. After spending about two hours we decided it was time for lunch and headed into Custer.

Dennis had heard about a place called the Black Hills Hamburger and Bun so we set out to find it. This is where it gets kinda funny, we stopped at a gas station and over the radio I asked Dennis to go inside and ask where it was located since I could not find it on the GPS. Dennis walks in the station once inside I look next door and it’s right there, next to the station so as he comes walking out we both point at it at the same time. I had asked Lance to go ahead and go over there and get a table for nine. I have no idea why but as soon as I saw Dennis heading to his bike we took off for the restaurant but as we all pulled up to it there was no place to park and people were waiting in line to go in so I told Lance to forget it and we will go somewhere else. So we started riding around town looking for a place to eat once we found a place and parked we noticed that we did not have a Dennis, we had left him back at the station and he had no idea where we were at. My cell phone rings and its Dennis wondering where in the heck are you guys. We did get all back together and had a great lunch.

We had a beautiful ride in Custer Park saw hundreds of Prairie Dogs, some Sheep and LOTS of Buffalo with some standing right next to the road.

After a REALLY LONG and BORING ride on HWY 79 for about 40 miles and another AGONIZING and PAINFUL few miles through downtown Rapid City it was a great surprise to wind up on fantastic Nemo Road, I’m talking FANTASTIC!! A few times Lance, Frank and myself had what I would call a spirited ride on perfect pavement. Man oh man that was a LOT of fun.

We did go through Sturgis and it was strange for the town to be so quiet and not to see a town full of motorcycles but it was great for everyone to be to at least say they had been to Sturgis for those who had not been here during Bike Week.

We than went up 85 towards our hotel I wanted to take everyone to Tatanka. Tatanka is a beautiful place Kevin Costner built after filming Dancing with the Wolves, he dedicated it by telling the history of the Bison and how important the Bison was to the Indians. Unfortunately it was closed for the season so we could not go in.

We got back to the hotel about 5pm and rested up for dinner. Once again we met over at the Millstone Restaurant. Everyone must have been a little tired because most went to their room fairly early.

Well another boring day of riding in this beautiful country with full sunshine and high of 79 degrees. Oh Well someone has to do it!!!

Black Hills Day 1 Riding was Awesome!

Both groups had a great ride today.  The Badlands group stopped at Wall Drug for lunch and then a quick visit to Sturgis.  We then had a blast riding 14A from Sturgis to Spearfish.  The Spearfish Cabin is great.  David did a great job leading us for the day.  Rex said that the Crazy Horse group had a great ride too.

Where are all the bikes? We are in Sturgis and it is quiet?!?! Are we late?

Where's the noise???

Day 3, Monday September 1, 2014 Chadron, Nebraska to Spearfish, South Dakota
179 Miles, 1154 Miles So Far

What a great morning, woke up to beautiful sunshine and a temperature of 54 degrees. There’s no coffee in our rooms so the very nice lady who owns the Bunkhouse Motel set up coffee and chairs underneath an awning outside so we all could sit around visit and get the day started with a good cup of coffee.

David and the Motel owner wanted us all lined up so they get a picture of everyone with their bikes in front of the hotel. She is really a neat person. After all the picture had been taken we left at 9am for breakfast at Helen’s Café. Gary and Sheryl decided to do some shopping so they headed to Walls Drug Store and then rode through the Bad Lands. After a great breakfast David wanted a rest from leading so he asked Mark to lead us towards the Black Hills, Mark with a HUGE SMILE accepted. Everyone started getting very excited when you started making out the beautiful Black Hills coming into view.

It looked like we were going to get to our hotel very early so Mark pulled all over in Custer and asked what everyone wanted to do. It was decided that we would at least go by Mount Rushmore and possible go in. As soon as we got to the entrance of Mount Rushmore it started raining and on the radar it looked like we could possible get soaked so everyone decided to head to the Best Western in Spearfish except Mr. Mark Jensen he decided and without telling anyone that he was going to go ahead and go in, the rest of us headed to our home for the night. As you know Mark can be a little hard headed at times. He had a great time on his short visit of Rushmore and ran into a man traveling by motorcycle from Massachusetts, just lucky can he be to run into the other Red Sox fan from the US.

It rained on us for several miles on Hwy 14 and by the time we turned onto 14A it was starting to letting up a little. Most of the riding on 14A was absolutely fantastic with a little rain now and then. Ray, Ron and myself had gotten in the front of the pack and got into one of those great riding rhythms and a wonderful time in the twistees of 14A. I have no doubts that everyone loved riding 14A.

We all arrived at the Best Western safe and sound checked in and unpacked the bikes. It will great being able to stay at one Hotel for four days without having to pack up every morning. About an hour later here came Gary and Sheryl back from their day of going solo.

After everyone had unpacked their bikes. The sun came out and most of us met outside with some washing their bikes, some taking a ride around the area, some filling up with gas and getting provision from the Convenience Store and Poor Ray having to work on his intercom that his wife Lisa had purposely filled with water before we left.

At 6pm we all met next door at the Millstone Restaurant, the food and service was outstanding. After a great meal you know who decided to have desert, once I tell you what dessert consisted of you will know who ordered it. Chocolate Fudge Cake topped with Ice Cream, Whipped Cream with Hot Fudge on top. I will have you know that Ray ate most of that all by himself and we have pictures to prove it.

After dinner we sat around in the Lobby to decide what was on a agenda for tomorrow and after about an hour of discussion it was decided that we will meet for breakfast and decide.

David could not have picked out a better location for us to stay at here in Spearfish, Very Nice Best Western Hotel
Millstone Restaurant next door, great food and friendly people
Motorcycle wash station set up next to the Hotel in the parking lot Nice Tavern in the Hotel Lobby with a friendly Bartender
Gas Station & Convenience Store with Slot Machines across the street

Today with the on and off rain with straight roads and wonderful twisties it will go down in our memories as another Adventuress Day,

Have a great day,
Rex

First night dinner in Spearfish

Nice restaurant next to the Best Western in Spearfish

Rex's post from Day 2 (August 31)

Day 2, Sunday August 31, 2014
Lamar, Colorado to Chadron, Nebraska
397 Miles, 976 Miles So Far

Sunday morning we left the Motel at 8:30 with our Fearless Leader David at the front of the pack.

There isn’t really anything to write about with Sundays ride, it was pretty uneventful. We’ll there was one thing when we got into Nebraska the wind was blowing like I had never seen it before. It was hitting us from left to right and I must say it was really hard keeping the bike on the road. It reminded me about the time JR, Bob Timme and myself road to the Hill Country several years ago during three tornadoes. We really didn’t realize what was going on until we stopped at a Denny’s and they would not let us in because part of the roof had blown off. The wind Sunday was so hard that Lance got so uptight that he ran with his emergency flashers on for the rest of the day, well maybe not rest of day but it was a long time.

We stopped to fuel up about 57 miles from Chadron and I decided I would go ahead of the group and scout the rest of the route. When I looked back Howard, Ron, and Frank were right behind me. BTW, even though we were riding at the suggested posted speed limit Howards Radar Detector can pick up an officer of the law five miles away (just sayin). As we got into Chadron what looked like snow on the side of the road turned out to be sleet and lot of it! We arrived at the Bunkhouse Motel about 4pm after a brief rain shower.

We decided to have a hamburger and some chose pizza at a hamburger place, who would have ever believed that a pizza at hamburger place would be a lot better than the hamburgers. Next time I’m getting the PIZZA!!!!!

After getting back to our rooms and doing what we do best which is making fun of each other and laughing so hard that you think you’re going to bust a gut. I don’t how many of you have heard David Adams laugh but he laughs so hard that is makes you laugh with him it’s just crazy, you just gotta love it.

What can I say, but just another great day of riding.

P.S. Linda, Linda listen I forgot to say in my Day 1 report that Ronnie didn’t eat anything really fattening and he did not eat much whatsoever, seriously.

I hope you all had a great Labor Day!!!!!

Rex

We have arrived in Spearfish

Well we finally got hit with rain and some of it was pretty heavy.  All is good and we are settled in here in Spearfish.

Mt Rushmore

Getting rained on at Rushmore.  The test of the group continued to Spearfish, so I am here alone. Well except for a lot of other tourists.  I met a BMW rider from Massachusetts.  He has been on the road since August 11.

Last stop in Chadron

Time for the rest of the gang to have breakfast.

Rex's post from Day 1 (August 30)

LSR 2014 Black Hills Ride

Day 1, Saturday August 30, 2014
Denton to Lamar, Colorado

Well it was very early on a Saturday morning to go and meet the guys at the Cracker Barrel in Denton at 7am. I’m sure you all know it’s hard to go to sleep the night before a big ride but when that alarm goes off at 3:30 am you wished maybe someone would have not knocked you out in order to get more rest.

So at 4:45 I’m off to meet David Adams and Dennis Benoit at the Chevron station at 190 & Jupiter Rd at 5am to head to Denton. We will be meeting up with Ray Harrelson, Ron Vickery, Larry Rodgers, Jeff Zahn, Marty Cobb, and Butch Youngblood.

Once we sat down for breakfast to our surprise our good friends Rick Butler and Joe Freeland came walking up to our table, man oh man were we surprised!!!! Can you believe that those guys got up that early in the morning to meet us in Denton at 6am in the morning? It was a great and meaningful surprise and very much appreciated (great guys).

Well what can I say, our journey to Lamar CO was not very interesting except being with some great friends. It’s just something about riding for almost 600 miles on a straight road for almost ten hours that just leaves a lot to be desired. We missed our left turn to 83 in Childers and decided to take 287 all the way, it did knock off almost 45 miles off of our route but to be honest it was not necessarily a bad thing.

We arrived at the Blue Spruce Motel at about 4:30 and met up with Mark Jensen, Howard Evans, Gary & Sheryl Sanders, Frank Jester and Lance McGehee. Those guys decided to leave a day early to keep from having to do the 600 mile road killer in one day but you know we gave them a hard time. The motel was pretty good very clean, great water pressure, and a comfortable mattress really not bad for $60.00 including tax.

We walked across the street and had Mexican food AGAIN because we had Mexican food also for lunch. After sitting around the pool laughing having some adult beverages and laughing some more and having MORE adult beverages we felt like maybe we should just walk across the street and eat MORE Mexican food.

All in all a great day,
Rex

On to Spearfish this morning

We only have 175 miles today. A slow and easy day through the Black Hills National Forest to our home for the next 5 nights in Spearfish SD.  This is going to be a fun day!
