Rex's post from Day 1 (August 30)

LSR 2014 Black Hills Ride

Day 1, Saturday August 30, 2014
Denton to Lamar, Colorado

Well it was very early on a Saturday morning to go and meet the guys at the Cracker Barrel in Denton at 7am. I’m sure you all know it’s hard to go to sleep the night before a big ride but when that alarm goes off at 3:30 am you wished maybe someone would have not knocked you out in order to get more rest.

So at 4:45 I’m off to meet David Adams and Dennis Benoit at the Chevron station at 190 & Jupiter Rd at 5am to head to Denton. We will be meeting up with Ray Harrelson, Ron Vickery, Larry Rodgers, Jeff Zahn, Marty Cobb, and Butch Youngblood.

Once we sat down for breakfast to our surprise our good friends Rick Butler and Joe Freeland came walking up to our table, man oh man were we surprised!!!! Can you believe that those guys got up that early in the morning to meet us in Denton at 6am in the morning? It was a great and meaningful surprise and very much appreciated (great guys).

Well what can I say, our journey to Lamar CO was not very interesting except being with some great friends. It’s just something about riding for almost 600 miles on a straight road for almost ten hours that just leaves a lot to be desired. We missed our left turn to 83 in Childers and decided to take 287 all the way, it did knock off almost 45 miles off of our route but to be honest it was not necessarily a bad thing.

We arrived at the Blue Spruce Motel at about 4:30 and met up with Mark Jensen, Howard Evans, Gary & Sheryl Sanders, Frank Jester and Lance McGehee. Those guys decided to leave a day early to keep from having to do the 600 mile road killer in one day but you know we gave them a hard time. The motel was pretty good very clean, great water pressure, and a comfortable mattress really not bad for $60.00 including tax.

We walked across the street and had Mexican food AGAIN because we had Mexican food also for lunch. After sitting around the pool laughing having some adult beverages and laughing some more and having MORE adult beverages we felt like maybe we should just walk across the street and eat MORE Mexican food.

All in all a great day,
Rex
